Trinity URC & Trinity Centre, Wimbledon
Mansel Road, Wimbledon SW19 4AA
In late 1883, a group of like-minded people concluded that the time was right to form a 'Scotch Church' for the Wimbledon area and a deputation was appointed to approach the Presbytery of London with the proposal. This was accepted and the 'preaching station' of Trinity Presbyterian Church was established in January 1884. Its venue was the old Drill Hall in St George's Road, Wimbledon. By mid-1891, however, the site on Mansel Road had been acquired and the current church and adjoining hall were built.
During World War I, Trinity's contribution to the war effort was the running of the 'Soldiers Hall'. Several thousand men were stationed on Wimbledon Common and Trinity threw the Hall open nightly to the soldiers, who were provided with refreshments and entertainment. Letters of thanks were received from many parts of the world.
